“The important thing is to never stop questioning.”  - Albert Einstein

Science national curriculum (Click to read)

Walk into one of our science lessons at Broad Town and watch as our children build upon prior learning and develop substantive scientific knowledge which they reinforce whilst working scientifically. Step into a range of sessions across the school and our carefully, sequenced curriculum becomes apparent, highlighted by our children’s ability to make meaningful connections within and across scientific disciplines.

We believe it is important that children remember and recall science curriculum knowledge to support their learning. We provide children with Science knowledge organisers, detailing the most important information they need to know. Children are quizzed on these in low-stakes, fun recall sessions to embed the learning of key facts and concepts in their long-term memories.

Our science provision provides a variety of WOW learning opportunities, aimed at increasing children’s science capital. Opportunities which include:exploring reversible and irreversible changes, using forensics to catch a criminal; organising a science fair; growing plants in our local community and having hands on experiences at a farm!

Our Forest school activities promotes self-esteem, creativity, confidence and independence and often link to the science national curriculum and foundation stage objectives.

Science at Home

There are lots of ways in which you can support your child with their Science learning.

•        Spend time outside making and talking about scientific observations

•        Visit Science venues and museums

•        Ask your child about their Science learning – they will have lots to tell you!

•        Engage in scientific enquiries such as planting seeds; making observations over time of the changing seasons, the moon or growth of a family member/pet; making shadows or identifying reversible and irreversible changes in the kitchen whilst cooking.

SCIENCE CURRICULUM MAP OVERVIEW

EYFS is separate from the National Curriculum (NC) however the children's experiences form the foundation for their learning in Year 1 and beyond from the Science NC.

EYFS - Understanding the world

In foundation stage the children…….

  • Explore their own bodies and their senses
  • Learn to name the parts of the body and what we use them for.
  • Learn about animals and their homes, including pets, farm animals and wild animals.
  • Observe changes such as chicks hatching and caterpillars turning into butterflies, the seasons changing, plants and flowers growing. They are supported to notice and talk about what is happening and why.
  • Learn about being healthy, including eating a range of foods and taking part in exercise.
  • Develop a sense of curiosity and exploration through a range of resources relating to our topics, e.g. magnets, magnifying glasses, things to smell and taste etc, and through the continuous provision areas such as sand, water, small world, construction etc.
